History of Jagannath Temple

The holy Jagannath Temple of Puri, located in the eastern Indian state of Odisha, stands as one of the four most sacred Char Dham pilgrimage sites in Hinduism. The temple was constructed in the 12th century by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty. Built in the traditional Kalinga architectural style, it symbolizes centuries of devotion and heritage.

Lord Jagannath, a form of Lord Vishnu, is worshipped here along with his siblings, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra. The temple is world-famous for its grand annual Rath Yatra, during which the deities are taken out in beautifully decorated chariots. Millions of devotees gather to witness this spectacular festival filled with divine energy and joy.

The temple’s kitchen is believed to be the largest in the world, serving thousands of devotees daily with the holy Mahaprasad prepared using age-old traditions. Each ritual performed here reflects deep-rooted beliefs, symbolizing purity, faith, and universal brotherhood.

About the Temple and Its Significance

The Shree Jagannath Temple is unique because the idols of the deities are made from sacred neem wood instead of stone or metal. Every 12 to 19 years, these idols are replaced in a grand ritual called Nabakalebara, representing the cycle of life and renewal. Inside the temple, devotees can experience the powerful aura of daily ceremonies such as Mangala Aarti, Abakasha, and Sandhya Aarti.

The temple has four main entrances known as Dwaras — the Singhadwara (Lion Gate) being the most prominent. Each entrance represents a spiritual path leading to inner peace. Non-Hindu visitors can still witness the temple’s grandeur from the Raghunandan Library rooftop nearby.

The surroundings of the temple, with the rhythmic sound of the sea and the chants of devotees, make the Puri Jagannath Tour Package an unforgettable spiritual experience.
