Vaishno Devi Yatra Guide: How to Reach, Registration & Helicopter Booking

Home / Blog / Post

Mata Vaishno Devi in the Trikuta hills near Katra, Jammu, is one of the most visited shrines in India, drawing over a crore pilgrims every year. The darshan is of three natural rock forms — the Pindis — representing Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Saraswati. This guide covers the whole journey: how to reach, registration, the trek route, helicopter and battery-car options, and the best time to visit.

How to reach Katra (the base town)

  • By train: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) is the railhead, with direct trains from Delhi, and connections via Jammu Tawi.
  • By air: Jammu Airport is about 50 km from Katra; Srinagar is another option. Taxis and buses run to Katra in roughly 1.5–2 hours.
  • By road: Katra is well connected by bus and taxi from Jammu, Delhi and Amritsar.

Yatra registration (the RFID slip)

Every pilgrim needs a free yatra registration slip (RFID card) before starting the climb. Collect it at the Yatra Registration Counter near the Katra bus stand, or register online in advance on the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) website. The RFID card is scanned at Banganga (the start of the track) and again at the Bhawan — keep it safe and return it after darshan.

The trek route (about 13 km)

From Katra, the main paved track to the Bhawan is roughly 12–13 km:

  1. Banganga — the registration checkpoint and start of the climb.
  2. Charan Paduka — where the Mata’s footprints are believed to be.
  3. Ardhkuwari — the sacred Garbha Joon cave, roughly halfway.
  4. Sanjichhat — the high point and helipad, after which the path descends to the Bhawan.
  5. Bhawan — the holy cave for darshan of the three Pindis.

After darshan, many pilgrims also visit the Bhairavnath temple, about 2.5 km uphill from the Bhawan, to complete the yatra.

Ways to make the climb

  • On foot — the traditional way; allow 5–8 hours up depending on fitness.
  • Battery car — runs on parts of the newer track between Ardhkuwari/Sanjichhat and the Bhawan.
  • Pony, palki or porter — available at fixed rates from Banganga.
  • Ropeway — connects Bhawan and Bhairavnath, saving the final uphill stretch.

Helicopter booking

The helicopter flies between Katra and Sanjichhat in about 8 minutes, after which a 2.5–3 km walk (or battery car / pony) covers the last stretch to the Bhawan. Key points:

  • Book online on the official SMVDSB portal — tickets can be reserved up to about 60 days in advance and sell out fast during Navratri and holidays.
  • The one-way fare is around ₹2,100 per person (subject to revision by the Shrine Board).
  • Carry the same original ID used at booking and reach the helipad about an hour early for security checks.
  • Hand luggage is limited (roughly 5–10 kg per person).

Best time to visit

The shrine is open all year. March–April and September–October offer the most pleasant weather. Summer (May–June) is busy with holiday crowds, the monsoon can bring landslides on the approach roads, and winter darshan (December–January) is beautiful but cold, sometimes with snow near the Bhawan. The two Navratri periods are the most crowded — plan extra time if you travel then.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vaishno Devi registration free?

Yes. The yatra RFID slip is issued free of charge. Only optional services like the helicopter, ponies or battery cars are paid.

How long does the yatra take?

On foot, a fit pilgrim needs about 5–8 hours up and 4–6 hours down. With a helicopter and battery car, darshan can be completed in a few hours.

Can elderly parents do the yatra?

Yes — with the helicopter to Sanjichhat plus a battery car or palki, the physically demanding part is largely avoided. Our Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra package arranges Katra stays, registration assistance and helicopter or palki as needed.
